Ángel Di María has signed for Benfica on a free transfer from Juventus

Free transfer from Juventus

Benfica Lisbon have officially announced the long-awaited return of world champion Ángel Di María. The Portuguese media, among others, had already reported in mid-June on an agreement between the 35-year-old attacker and the record champions. The offensive player leaves Juventus Turin after a year on a free transfer and is committed to Benfica until 2024.

Di María has also previously been linked with a move to the USA to join Inter Miami, where his compatriot Lionel Messi signed, and the Saudi Pro League, which is currently attracting international star after international star. But now he is returning to Lisbon, where Di María made his first stop in Europe in 2007 for 8 million euros, coming from Rosario Central. In all, the right winger has made 121 appearances for the Águias, contributing 15 goals and 28 assists, before moving on to Real Madrid in 2010 for more than four times the fee.

A total of 179 million euros was paid for the left foot in his career. In the course of Transfermarkt’s most recent Series A update, the market value of the Argentine, which was once estimated at EUR 65 million, was devalued again by EUR 2 million to EUR 8 million. In his one year with the “Old Lady”, where he transferred from Paris on a free transfer last summer, Di María had eight goals in 26 league games. After Feyenoord’s Orkun Kökcü and the American Joshua Wynder, he is the third permanent signing for the coming season in the team of German coach Roger Schmidt.

Di María officially said goodbye in Turin at the beginning of June. “I left a difficult and complicated phase behind me. I leave with the peace of mind of someone who gave everything to help the club keep winning trophies but it wasn’t possible. I’m leaving the club with the bitter feeling of not having made it, but also with the happiness of being able to take many friends with me from this wonderful dressing room that I was a part of,” wrote the world champion on Instagram.

The first version of the article appeared on June 21st and was updated on July 5th after the fixed report by Benfica.
