The Georgian electoral college has appointed Mikheil Kavelashvili as the country’s new president. He succeeds pro-European President Salome Zurabishvili. Kavelashvili is a former professional footballer who played for Manchester City, among others, but he is now mainly known as a politician who is very critical of the influence of the West on Georgia.
