AFC Cup: Kuala Lumpur in international final for first time in 28 years

Defeated Sogdiana Jizzakh

The tale of rank underdogs Kuala Lumpur City FC in the AFC Cup continues. Against the Uzbek representative Sogdiana Jizzakh, who are playing for the first time ever, the Malaysia team won 5-3 on penalties on Wednesday evening and thus qualified for the final. Sogdiana full-back Shakhboz Jurabekov was the only one to miss.

Kuala Lumpur last played internationally in the 1994/95 season in the Asian Cup Winners’ Cup and this year is also represented for the first time in the AFC Cup. Ahead of the game, AFC Cup top scorer Paulo Josue explained that “we are a small club with a small budget. We’re not superstars, but we’re a team with a great heart. (…) It means a lot to us to take this big step for the club and for Malaysian football.” Full-back Declan Lambert spoke of “one of the best experiences” of his life and an “emotional roller coaster ride”. On October 22, the reigning Malaysian Cup winners meet Omani team Al-Seeb, who previously won 4-0 against Al-Riffa SC from Bahrain (read the news).
