The Pophouse Entertainment company of Björn Ulvaeus, a founding member of the Abba group and who has influenced it for decades, has bought up to 75% of the copyrights to the songs of the late Swedish EDM artist Avicii. Avicii, aka Tim Bergling, took his own life at only 28 years old in 2018.
The reason for the deals was the intention of the artist’s parents to get more funds for their foundation Tim Bergling Foundation for the operation. The foundation raises awareness of mental health disorders, especially among children and young people, and strives to prevent suicides.
In addition to the shops, Bergling’s parents and Ulvaeus have worked together on the interactive Avicii Experience museum in Stockholm. At the exhibition, visitors could record their own version of the artist’s well-known song.
Bergling’s parents still own 25% of the copyrights of their son’s music production, but the deals ensured the financial stability of the foundation’s important work in the future.
– Now we have better conditions to act more on issues related to mental health disorders in children and young people, the artist’s father Klass Bergling says in the announcement.

Many other artists who are also alive have sold the copyrights of their own songs. One example is Justin Timberlakewho signed a contract with Hipgnosis Song Management, handing over the rights to up to 200 of his songs to the company for a good 100 million euros.
This is how the rights to use Timberlake’s songs have been outsourced, for example in case of his death. In this case, the artist’s own estate would not have to fight with the rights.
