Finnish coach From Antti Törmänen, 52, a new tumor has been found. Törmänen’s club EHC Biel-Bienne announced the news on Tuesday.
– Unfortunately, our head coach Antti Törmäni was found to have a new tumor during a routine check-up. The diagnosis means that Anti will soon have to undergo six months of treatment, the club said in its press release.
– We are shocked and sad.
Törmänen was diagnosed with gallbladder cancer in July 2020. He was sidelined for a year from his duties as head coach of Biel-Bienne.
Törmänen told Iltalehte last summer that what he remembered most about his battle with cancer was the pain experienced by those close to him.
– What saddened me the most was how hard it was for the family and loved ones. You always think you can get through your own problems, that’s why the family’s situation was the worst, Törmänen said.
However, the Finnish pilot returned behind the bench and is already coaching for the sixth season in the Swiss team.
Törmänen’s team is currently playing in the playoffs of the Swiss main league. The Finn continues as the club’s chief executive, but as the sports director Martin Steinegger has been promoted to help him in the coaching management.
– The entire EHCB family wishes Antti and his family all the best for the new battle! Stay strong! the club wrote.
Törmänen’s contract with the club continues until spring 2024.
