A chance for ice fun again in December for twelve years: ‘But then it has to freeze properly on Tuesday and Wednesday!’

It could just happen that we can put on our skates (very briefly) on Wednesday, reports weatherman Jan Visser. For the first time in twelve years it will be quite cold again in December.

Tuesday and Wednesday morning it will freeze lightly to moderately with temperatures down to -3 degrees. The last time that December showed old-fashioned cold temperatures was in 2010, says Visser. “If all goes well and the ice masters think the ice is strong enough, we might be able to skate on flooded meadows or cinder tracks,” says the weatherman. “But then it really has to freeze on Tuesday and Wednesday morning.”

Extra cold

The last time it froze during the day was in February 2021. Jan Visser: “During these so-called ice days it froze all day. There was also snowdrift (snowfall driven by the wind, ed.).”

Next Tuesday and Wednesday the sun will shine during the day and there will be little wind, so the wind chill will be the same as the temperature indicated by the barometer. “Winter showers may fall on Wednesday, in the afternoon I expect temperatures between 3 and 5 degrees,” says Visser. In Wijk aan Zee, the dune areas, Haarlemmermeer and ‘t Gooi it will probably be extra cold, he expects.

“Wednesday it can become slippery locally due to the winter showers, but due to the dry air it won’t be too bad for the rest of the week”

Locally smooth

The possible ice fun is probably short-lived: temperatures will rise again on Thursday and Friday. And although the municipality of Bloemendaal, among others, has already indicated that it will spread preventively to prevent roads from freezing, Visser thinks that the chance of slipperiness is small.

“On Wednesday it can become slippery locally due to the winter showers, but due to the dry air it will not be too bad for the rest of the week.” Whether those winter showers will continue and we can look forward to a white Christmas in the province? “Christmas is still a long way off, but the chances seem slim. In any case, the run-up to Christmas will be quite soft.”
