Liverpool FC gifted themselves with their 13th win of the season at Christmas and extended their lead in the Premier League thanks to the mistakes made by their competitors. The 3:1 (1:1) win against newly promoted Leicester City on matchday 18 was hard work for Arne Slot’s team.
Jordan Ayew (6th) put the 2016 sensational champions in the lead. Then the Reds missed chance after chance before Cody Gakpo (45th+1) scored the well-deserved equalizer with his tenth goal of the season. In the second half, Liverpool continued to press and took a quick 2-1 lead through Curtis Jones (49′). Mohamed Salah (82nd) made the final score with an anniversary: he scored the 100th home goal in his career at Liverpool.
Liverpool’s lead over Chelsea FC is already seven points with one game less. In the city derby against FC Fulham, the Londoners despaired at times against German keeper Bernd Leno and ultimately had to admit defeat 1:2 (1:0). For the Cottagers it was the first win at Stamford Bridge since 1979. Meanwhile, Cole Palmer became the most successful goalscorer within a calendar year in Chelsea’s history with his 26th league goal.
