Germany’s handball players will meet France, second in the World Cup, or Spain, third in the World Cup, in the preliminary round of the 2024 home European Championship. The German Handball Federation announced that this was already certain before the group draw on May 10th in Düsseldorf.
The DHB team was grouped in pot 2 by the European Handball Federation. In addition to France and Spain, pot 1 includes world champions Denmark, European champions Sweden, Norway and Iceland. However, the latter four teams are already seeded for other groups and are therefore not eligible as German preliminary round opponents.
There are four pots, each with six teams. It is also certain that national coach Alfred Gislason’s team will play the opening game of the European Championship on January 10 next year against a nation from pot 4.
Possible opponents for the game in the Düsseldorf soccer arena are Switzerland, Romania, Montenegro and the three newcomers to the finals, Greece, Georgia and the Faroe Islands.
