“There was no scandal. Nothing went wrong. That’s neater, but it also makes it harder and more confusing, because you can’t refer to ‘The Thing’,” Drew Barrymore tells People about her divorce from Will Kopelman, the father of her two daughters. “We tried so hard to make it work. A friend told me, “Divorce is the death of a dream.” And that’s exactly what it feels like: something so final you can’t get it back.”
However, Drew was determined not to let her children suffer through her divorce. So she moved to New York to be closer to Will’s family. But in that first winter, things got tough. “I was broken,” she says. Alcohol helped. “I tried to numb the pain and feel good again. Alcohol helped.” Fortunately, it did not develop into a real addiction. When she was barely 12, she was treated for the first time for addiction. So Drew recognized the warning signs in time and decided to stop drinking and go to therapy. “My children made me feel it was now or never,” he said. “And my talk show gave me something to focus on and commit myself to. It gave us something to believe in.”
