The two-time German Vice Champion Frederic Wandres took second place at the Great Dressage Prize in Aachen behind the big World Championship favorite Cathrine Dufour (Denmark).
On Sunday (July 3rd, 2022) Wandres was more than five points behind Dufour and Vamos Amigos on the 15-year-old gelding Duke of Britain. Third was their compatriot Daniel Bachmann-Andersen with Marshall-Bell. Wandres had recently been at the top and the won the first dressage test in Aachen.
Klimke with hopes of world championships
The other two Germans had nothing to do with the decision at the top. Sixth was Benjamin Werndl (Aubenhausen) with Famoso.
Ingrid Klimke (Münster) came in twelfth with a strong Franziskus, who was startled by the applause of the spectators on the last line and showed a few unplanned strides. Apart from that, Klimke’s double start in dressage and eventing ended positively.
And Sunday got better and better for Klimke: Later on Sunday, the 54-year-old from Münster was provisionally nominated for the Dressage World Championships in Herning together with other riders, including Wandres. The final roster must be named by July 25.
Last year’s winner Werth forced to watch
Sporty was absent last year’s winner Isabell Werth was disqualified on Saturday. The seven-time Olympic champion was forced to watch the freestyle. During her ride on Saturday, the 52-year-old from Rheinberg was stopped by the judges when blood was seen on the mouth of her stallion Quantaz. According to the rules, Werth had to stop her ride and was disqualified.
Quantaz bit his tongue, Werth said. “If you haven’t experienced everything, you haven’t been there long enough”she said ironically. “It was the first time and hopefully the last time.” Since 2017 she had won the freestyle in Aachen every year.
