As expected, the German footballers completed their World Cup qualification with an away win. On Tuesday evening in Ljubljana they managed a difficult 2-0 (1-0) win against bottom group Slovenia. The DFB team had already bought their World Cup ticket.

It was a success without any glamor at the Stozice Stadium. An own goal from Slovenia’s Lara Prasnikar (39′) and a goal from Shekiera Martinez (50′) ensured the fifth success in the sixth and final game of the World Cup qualification. It wasn’t as clear as in the first leg (5-0) in the game on Tuesday evening (June 9th, 2026), which was no longer important in terms of sport. The DFB women had already secured their World Cup ticket four days earlier with a 2-0 win against Norway – the first European team to do so.

Eight fresh players in the DFB starting eleven

National coach Christian Wück made a number of changes compared to the home game against the Scandinavians, with eight fresh players rotated into the starting eleven. Among others, Ann-Katrin Berger got a deserved break in goal, with Ena Mahmutovic playing for her. And Janina Minge from VfL Wolfsburg led the team onto the pitch as captain after serving a red card suspension, replacing the injured Giulia Gwinn. Only Carlotta Wamser, Elisa Senß and Klara Bühl were there from the start on Friday in Cologne against the Norwegians.

Wück team is having a very difficult time

The newly formed DFB team found it difficult to overcome the Slovenians’ compact defense in temperatures of almost 30 degrees. The hosts created more of a goal threat in the first half hour. In the 19th minute they even celebrated the lead – but this was too early. Maja Sternad was offside before her shot went under the crossbar of the German goal. The goal was consequently disallowed.

A bad pass from goalkeeper Mahmutovic soon created a very good chance for the bottom of the group. Slovenia’s captain Mateja Zver immediately passed across to Lara Prasnikar, who shot from a central position from the edge of the penalty area, but her unplaced shot was denied by the FC Bayern Munich keeper (28th).

Germany takes the lead thanks to an own goal

It was thanks to Slovenian help that the DFB women were able to go into the locker room with a 1-0 lead. After a corner from Bühl, Wolfsburg’s Sarai Linder extended the shot from the back of the head at the first post. The ball would have rolled past the Slovenian goal and into the goal, but Prasnikar maneuvered the ball into his own goal with the tip of his foot (39′).

Martinez increased the lead to 2-0 after the restart

After the restart, the Germans played more forward. The reward came quickly: After the Slovenian goalkeeper Zala Mersnik was unable to hold on to a shot from Melissa Kössler, Martinez was there. The West Ham United attacker made it 2-0 (50th). Vivien Endemann almost scored again a little later, but this time Mersnik made a good save (56′).

After that the game sputtered along. Although Germany continued to push for the hosts’ goal, their offensive game lacked determination. This time it was only enough for a 2-0 win.
