In the clip, Lidia (the protagonist played by Imogen Poots) is about to dive into the pool for a competition: competitive swimming is in fact his first port of call, after a painful childhood and adolescence, on the path to finding his place in the world. Raised amidst abuse in a dysfunctional and problematic family, Lidia grasps in sport the promise of a better life. But between grief, toxic relationships and addictions, it will not be an easy or linear path. At least until writing makes its way into his life, even throughmeeting with Ken Kesey (Jim Belushi): the author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest he will sense her creative potential by giving her a new direction.

«In its deepest core, The Chronology of Water it’s an invitation”, said the director: “An invitation to look ugliness in the face, to stay inside the shame and to get out of it knowing that your body and your story belong to you. It is an invitation to stop hiding.”

The film explores how trauma can be transformed into artthrough the reappropriation of our most painful and bloody stories, in particular those experienced by the bodies of women and girls.

A story of female self-determination

Presented at the Cannes Film Festival (section Un Certain Regard), The chronology of water it is therefore a powerful tale of female self-determination through memory, body and desire and an intimate exploration of female freedom beyond convention. Filmed in 16mm, «it uses cinematographic language to mimic the way memory lives in the body. Memories are not facts: they are perspectives that change”, the director further explained.
