“Scooby is finally real,” Netflix announced about its latest live-action series “Scooby-Doo: Origin.” It’s the first time Scooby-Doo isn’t an animated dog, but fans are divided.

The teaser opens from Scooby-Doo’s perspective: he’s poking around in the woods until he sees Shaggy Rogers (Tanner Hagen). “At their final summer camp, Shaggy and Daphne (McKenna Grace) become embroiled in a spooky mystery,” the official synopsis reads.

“It centers on a lost puppy who may have witnessed a supernatural murder. Together with the pragmatic Velma (Abby Ryder Fortson) and the strange but handsome Freddy (Maxwell Jenkins), they try to solve the mystery. They end up in a nightmare that seems to expose all their secrets,” it continues.

Scooby-Doo has been an icon for more than fifty years, with dozens of remakes and three films. But ‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’ is the first version with a real dog. Fans are hoping that the makers will find a way to give Scooby his iconic voice without making it look goofy.

Criticism

Reactions on social media are divided. Some say the dog doesn’t look like the ‘real’ Scooby-Doo. “That’s just a random brown puppy with a collar. Where’s the Great Dane energy?” said one fan. “This isn’t my Scooby-Doo,” says another. Fans are also discussing whether the puppy is a Great Dane. Fortunately, there are also positive reactions: “Finally, Netflix uses real animals instead of CGI. It’s perfect.”

‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’ will be released on Netflix in 2027.
