He kept the trophy on his bed, to keep him company on his first night as winner of the Monte Carlo Grand Prix, so that he could look at it once he opened his eyes in the morning and remember that yes, what he experienced on Sunday in the streets of the Principality could not have been just a dream. Andrea Kimi Antonelli made it known by posting on his social media a shot of the unmistakable Monegasque trophy, the one that has forever consecrated him as one of the winners of the most famous event on the Formula 1 calendar.

Appointments

The celebrations for Kimi began on Sunday afternoon when, once the classic commitments with the media following the conclusion of a race were over, the nineteen-year-old from Bologna was able to enjoy the success with his team, diving into the port of Monaco amidst the applause of the entire Mercedes team. However, the time available was also limited for the celebrations, because Antonelli was expected in the evening at the traditional Prince Albert Gala where the winner of the Monte Carlo GP is guest of honor at the event organized by the Ranieri family. Accompanying the Italian also in this unprecedented event was his father Marco: “The idea of having to wear a tuxedo scared me a lot – admitted Antonelli Senior – but I was happy to accompany my son even on an appointment like this”. An evening of royal celebrations for the youngest Prince the Monaco Grand Prix has ever had, in the unfailing presence of team principal Toto Wolff, who strongly believed in Antonelli’s growth, choosing him for the Mercedes development program when Kimi was only 12 years old and who on Sunday, exceptionally, stood on the podium alongside the boy to collect the Constructors’ trophy, something Wolff hadn’t done for ten years.

Preparation

Once his formal commitments in Monte Carlo were concluded, Kimi, who returned home with his father Marco to hug his mother Veronica and his little sister Maggie, almost immediately returned to “race week” mode, well aware that he had a new Grand Prix ahead of him to race on Sunday, in Barcelona, in what will be a completely different weekend in terms of performance, compared to what he saw in Monte Carlo. For Antonelli, whose commitments on the track will begin on Thursday with the media day at the circuit before getting back behind the wheel of his Mercedes starting on Friday, the next two days will be almost entirely focused on preparing for the next race. Physical training, always followed by his performance coach Sergi Avila, preparation sessions with the mental coach, whom Antonelli consults before and after race weekends for over a year, and work on the simulator to study in detail the pitfalls of the Barcelona circuit, where it will be fundamental to find the right feeling with the car from Friday, a detail that up to this point of the season has made the difference for Kimi, very comfortable with the car since the first results of free practice. “I like to prepare well with simulator work before hitting the track” admitted the Italian, who is part of a generation of young talents who have grown up with this tool. For him, commitments are divided between the Mercedes headquarters in Brackley, England, and home, in San Marino, where Kimi trains regularly with the new simulator that the team gave him: “I try the starts, which are always a weak point, and in general I prepare for the race by studying the circuit as best as I can.” This is what Kimi likes. More than Galas and important celebrations. Get ready to go back to racing immediately.
