Sixty asylum seekers slept in the Hullen sports hall in Roden last night. Yesterday, cabins were placed in the hall that will serve as emergency shelter for people from the overcrowded registration center in Ter Apel until Thursday.

Drenthe has recently provided emergency shelters more often. According to the mayor of Noordenveld, Klaas Smid (PRO), this has a logical explanation: “People are only taken to emergency shelter late at night, then the distance must be bridgeable.”

Emergency shelters were previously established in the municipalities of Borger-Odoorn and Aa en Hunze. “We felt that we had to take responsibility. You don’t want those people to spend the night on the field,” explains Mayor Smid.

However, the mayor once again emphasizes the importance of a structural solution. “The distribution law must be implemented. The Netherlands, in addition to the North, must contribute to this.”
