The appreciation within the club played a crucial role in Joshua Kimmich’s future in Munich. He was so close to a change.

Joshua Kimmich expressed his thoughts about leaving FC Bayern. “The club’s support wasn’t there as one would hope or wish,” explains Kimmich in the ZDF documentary “Kapitän Kimmich”, which can be seen in the ZDF media library from June 9th. “I had the feeling that Bayern were very open to letting me go. That doesn’t help the bond between club and player grow any stronger.”

There was a conversation between Kimmich and Bayern’s sports director Max Eberl. “If you want to leave, then you are for sale, then that is possible,” Eberl confirmed Kimmich’s feeling at the time. In the summer of 2024, the captain of the German national team was linked to a Bayern move. “As of now, I don’t know what would happen that would make me extend my contract here,” said Kimmich in the documentary two years ago. “I don’t want to rule it out 100 percent, but 95 percent of the time I don’t see it happening that I’ll extend this.”

“The financial situation was terrible”

At the same time, Paris Saint-Germain showed interest in the midfield strategist. “With Paris there was a club that was very committed. One that I hadn’t even had on my list,” Kimmich now gives some insight. He exchanged ideas with sports director Luís Campos and coach Luis Enrique. “If there is a lot of interest, and I have to say, they did a really good job and really gave you the impression that they really want you, then that’s a good thing to do,” said Kimmich.

However, a change in the summer fell through. A few months later, in the winter of 2025, PSG tried again. Sports director Campos visited Kimmich in Munich. “That caught me. I was supposed to be an important piece of the puzzle as a player with a little more experience. And that does something to you,” he reveals. Kimmich’s wife Lina, who met Campos and coach Enrique at the PSG training ground, also has her say in the documentary. She says the couple even looked at schools and neighborhoods in Paris.
