Helen Kevric, Karina Schönmaier and Co. sensationally secured the silver medal at the home European Championships in Leipzig. It was the first medal in Munich since the 2022 European Championship.
Despite the many cancellations, the German gymnasts managed the surprise. With 158,396 points, the team of national coach Gerben Wiersma won the silver medal at the Turn-European Championship in Leipzig. Gold scored Italy with 161,930 points. The French gymnasts finished third with 156,728 points. The German team had traveled without the German record champion Elisabeth Seitz, ex-world champion Pauline Schäfer-Betz and former European champion Emma Malewski. But the young guard – Helen Kevric (17), Lea Quaas (19), Janoah Müller (17), Karina Schönmaier (19) and Silja Stöhr (17) – convinced across the board.
Kevric, last year in Paris Olympia-Ehn in the all-around and sixth on the uneven bars, also reached the all-round final and the medal decision on the uneven bars. At her special device, she was the best of elimination with 14.766 points and can do justified gold hopes. Before the second, Nina Derwael from Belgium, Kevric had 0.366 points ahead. In the all -around, the Stuttgart native finished third with 53.932 points.
Abuse scandal overshadowed home
Karina Schönmaier qualified as the best with the average grade of 13.833 points for two jumps for the final, with 13,200 points as the sixth for the final fight on the ground and in all -around as eighth with 52.032 points.
It is the conciliatory start in a difficult European Championship. The DTB has been struggling with a severe crisis since the turn of the year because former and active gymnasts “Physical and mental abuse” at the federal bases in Stuttgart and Mannheim had denounced. “Of course, it is a very special EM from many ways,” said DTB sports director Thomas Gutekunst in an interview with the Sport Information Service (SID).
Men do gymnastics on Tuesday
The men’s team competition is on the program on Tuesday, and in addition to the team medals, the final places in the device end battles will also be done. The focus is primarily on Andreas Toba at the DTB team. The veteran, who was in the hearts of sports fans at Rio’s games, ended his career after the title fights in Leipzig at the age of 34.
