Hamburger SV failed to catch up with league leaders FC St. Pauli in the 2nd Bundesliga. In the away game at Holstein Kiel on Saturday, HSV lost 2:4 (0:1) – and was unable to take advantage of the Kiezkicker’s “mistake”.
Even though the journey north only took an hour, the guests showed their away face again in Kiel. Still without losing a point in the Volksparkstadion, HSV is still waiting for the second three-pointer on a foreign pitch after the seventh game. And KSV Holstein should have defeated the Hanseatic League more clearly.
The goals from Steven Skrzybski (20th/foul penalty) and Benedikt Pichler (57th) to make it 2-0 were the least given the multitude of chances. Robert Glatzel brought his team back into the game with a double strike (71st/80th) – but Kiel showed no nerves. Ex-Hamburg player Finn Porath (83rd) and Jonas Sterner (88th) ensured Kiel’s deserved victory.
KSV remains HSV’s feared opponent: there has only been one win in eleven second division duels. In the table, Kiel moved up to the relegation spot and came within one point of second-placed Hamburg. As a result of FC St. Pauli’s draw against Hannover 96 on Friday evening, HSV’s gap to first place has increased to three points.
Kiel doesn’t make enough of its chances
The northern duel on the fjord had only gained momentum very slowly. And the Kiel attack that led to 1-0 seemed anything but promising. HSV defender Dennis Hadzikadunic headed the cross from the right to his neighbor Miro Muheim. But the left-back switched gears far too slowly in this situation. Kiel’s Lewis Holtby intervened and gratefully accepted the touch on his ankle – penalty! Skrzybski stepped up and sent goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes into the wrong corner – 1-0 for Kiel (20th).
And as a result, it became increasingly clear that the HSV defense was lacking coordination. After Stephan Ambrosius was unavailable, the back four were in their seventh different line-up in the 13th game of the season. Skrzybski’s shot whizzed just past the far corner (35′). Just two minutes later, Timo Becker broke through on the right and Guilherme Ramos cleared in the middle from Fiete Arp at the last moment. And shortly afterwards Muheim was lucky that he didn’t score an own goal in the crowd (41′). HSV’s chances? Coach Tim Walter’s team didn’t get more than one dompé cross that got longer and longer and then landed on the outside post.
Pichler rewards Kiel for a strong game
And after Dompé missed the first half-chance of the second half, the score was 2-0 again. At first, Ramos Kiel just barely disturbed Pichler, who was ready to shoot – and perhaps shouldn’t have complained about a penalty whistle (48th). Then Colin Kleine-Bekel put a header wide from a very good position (50′) and Hadzikadunic just blocked Pichler’s shot (51′).
It was precisely in this pressure phase that HSV almost equalized. After a cross from William Mikelbrencis, Glatzel headed past goalkeeper Timon Weiner. But Marko Ivezic got his foot in between and cleared it with the help of the bottom edge of the crossbar (53′). And before Kiel’s usury of chances could really take revenge, Pichler took his next chance to make it 2-0. Holtby sent the Austrian steeply and the curved Ramos like a slalom pole: took the ball with his right and shot it in with his left, unstoppable for Heuer Fernandes (57th).
KSV finds the right answer to HSV’s double blow
As we have seen so often, Hamburg tried to turn things around in the final phase after a disappointing game. And as so often, it was Glatzel who brought his team back into the game. After a cross from Muheim, he came completely free to head the ball from five meters – 1:2 (71st). And just nine minutes later everything was open again. This time Bakery Jatta crossed and Glatzel headed into the empty goal because keeper Weiner had made a huge miscalculation.
However, the euphoria caused the people of Hamburg to lose their heads. Instead of judiciously using the momentum to their advantage, they allowed themselves to be countered. Of all people, the two ex-HSV players Arp, who asserted himself brilliantly and played the right pass, and Porath, who had just been substituted, hit the Hamburgers to the core. Porath ran freely towards Heuer Fernandes and heaved the ball into the net to give Kiel the lead again (83′). Five minutes later, the home team’s victory was perfect: After a hullabaloo in the HSV penalty area, Sterner scored to make the final score 4-2 (88′). Arp almost increased the score to 5:2 in stoppage time – Heuer Fernandes saved – and a win with a three-goal difference would have been deserved.
