FC coach with a dig
Coach Steffen Baumgart from 1. FC Köln took the liberty of taking a small dig at the goalscorer Anthony Modeste (34), who had migrated to Borussia Dortmund. “There is no question that Tony was something extraordinary for us. But what Tony distinguished last year was the team in his background,” Baumgart said before the away game at Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday on “DAZN” and added meaningfully: “We’re seeing it when a team doesn’t acts like that, you might not score as many goals as before. You have to say it so clearly.”
Modeste switched from “Effzeh” to BVB for 5.1 million euros almost two weeks ago and has since made two appearances in which he has not yet tried to score. The FC coach was also keen to assess the importance of the Frenchman, who was the fourth-best snapper in the Bundesliga with 20 goals last season. “Tony was an important player, but the responsibility on the pitch, they had Jonas Hector, Florian Kainz, Benno Schmitz,” emphasized the 50-year-old: “For us, the team is above everything. We live from the collective.”

Baumgart had already taken a clear position around the change. “It often annoyed me last year that it was all about him,” said the 50-year-old. “We will not argue away that we will certainly miss him in one situation or another just because we won without him. But we are now walking the path with people who want to walk it 100 percent. We came through the collective last year and we will again this year.” Without the attacker, Domstadt took four points in the first two games of the season and scored five goals from four shooters, once benefiting from an own goal from Leipzig Josko Gvardiol (20).
